It appears as though the City of Rome has its sights on a new permanent headquarters for the Rome Police Department.

Prior to Monday’s regular meeting, the Commission went into an executive session to discuss real estate.

Rome City Commissioner Jim Bojo then made a motion.

“This motion is as follows,” he said. “I ask the commission to authorize our city manager, Sammy Rich to move forward with pre-condemnation proceedings for the property located at the intersection of Riverside Parkway and Riverside Industrial for the potential purpose of acquiring this land for our future police department.”

The motion passed without any “no” votes.

The Rome Police Department is now temporarily headquartered in the former Scott Logistic building off of Technology Parkway (pictured).

More than $22 million was included in a special purpose, local option sales referendum approved by voters for the construction of a new city police headquarters.

The move was made necessary by the negotiations over the allocation of local sales tax revenues. As part of the agreement, both the city and county police agreed to vacate the join law enforcement center, which will be renovated for additional courtroom space.

The Floyd County Police Department is currently renovating the former Glenwood Primary School off of Old Dalton Road, which will be come the new county HQ.
