In 2026, the United States will celebrate its 250th Birthday, and the Xavier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution would like to present the City of Rome with a special bronze marker for the occasion.

Cameron Abney, current president of the Xavier Chapter recently told the city’s public works committee that they looked at a number of possible sites for the market and determined that Veterans Plaza at Myrtle Hill made the most sense.”

“Because our American Revolutionary War patriots are veterans,” she said.

The plaque is a 30×30 inch marker and sits on a 7 to 8-foot pole. The inscription reads:

“This marker commemorates the men and women who achieved American independence. Believing in the noble cause of liberty, these Patriots fought valiantly to found a new nation (1775-1783).”

Abney addressed the timeline for installing the marker.

“It’s a sixty-day turnaround because we have to get approval from the national organization,” she said. “This is just not something our Rome Chapter is doing, chapters all around the United States are putting up these markers. So, our turnaround is sixty days from final approval and they suggest that we schedule a dedication ceremony ten weeks out from the final approval.”

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 190,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally, including the Xavier Chapter in Rome.
