Jobless claims down in Rome

First-time claims for unemployment insurance fell in the Rome area last month.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, there were 799 initial claims filed in May, down from 1,218 in April.

There were a whopping 7,309 in May of last year.

Rome has also gained 2,600 jobs over the year.

However, we have remained at a total of 40,700 jobs for the last three months.

Looking at first-time claims in surrounding counties, Bartow was down from 1,076 in April to 1,001 in May.  There were 9,161 in May of last year.

Gordon County was down from 691 in April to 531 in May.  There were 5,302 this time last year.

Polk County had 309 initial claims last month, down from 537 the month before, and down from 2,806 in May of 2020.

Meanwhile, Chattooga County saw an increase over the month with 162 in May, compared to 114 in April.

That is still way down from the 608 initial claims reported a year ago.
