As the weather gets warmer, more people will be taking trips to the lake or the beach.

Students in both the Rome City and Floyd County school systems are on spring break next week.

According to Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department, there are some things you can do to help keep your home and belongings safe from thieves while you are out of town.

“You want to refrain from posting things on social media until you get back from your trip,” he said. “You don’t want to let people know that you are going to be out of town. Another thing you can do–especially with our new app–if you download the app, or if you are not an app person, you can call us as well and you can ask for a keep check for your house. Let us know if you are going to be out of town. Let us know who is supposed to be there or if somebody is coming by or anything like that so our officers know if they see somebody there. If they are taking care of the animals or whatnot, let us know. If you do that, we can let our officers know so they can come by and check on your residence and make sure everything is okay.”

He also suggests scheduling deliveries.

“If you are going to be out of town and you like to order lots of things online, try to schedule those deliveries for when you are going to be at home,” Hunton said. “That way, those things are not just sitting on your front porch or at the mailbox while you are away. Also, you can have your mail service temporarily stopped while you are away. You really just want to eliminate those signs that nobody is at home.”

So-called “porch pirates” remain an issue, although the increasing popularity of ring cameras has done a lot to help.

“There’s so much technology that is available to just about anybody,” Hunton added. “A lot of it is not unreasonably priced now. It’s not outside a homeowner or a renter’s price range.”
