New York man arrested for forgery and identity theft

A man from Brooklyn, New York is accused of trying to cash a forged check at a bank on East Second Avenue in Rome back in October of last year.

According to an arrest warrant:

38-old Raashaun Deshay Newman also presented a fraudulent Georgia identification card to complete the transaction.

The check was for $4,560.87.

Newman also tried to withdraw an additional $3,000 from the account of the same victim.

Newman, who is also wanted on an active warrant in Virginia, is charged with 3rd-degree forgery, identity fraud, and fugitive from justice.

Inmate accused of striking jail officer

An inmate at the Floyd County Jail has been charged with unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution and battery on a law enforcement officer.

According to jail records:

34-year-old Herbert Sebastian Shiflett of Silver Creek resisted a jail officer by striking him in the left thigh and hip area on Monday.

Shiflett has been in jail since December after allegedly biting a man during an altercation on Maple Road in Lindale on November 23.

On November 22, he reportedly destroyed the back windshield of a woman’s GMC Envoy and aggressively approached another woman while yelling at her on Gardener Drive in Rome.

He is also accused of punching his girlfriend’s television during an argument at an apartment on Northridge Court, also on November 22.
