Rome and Floyd County residents are invited to celebrate love, community, and trees this Valentine’s Day.

The City of Rome’s Arbor Day celebration begins Friday at 1 p.m. at Covington Park, located at the intersection of East 12th Street and Cave Spring Street.

“Covington Park is brand new so there is not a lot happening out there except for some really cool trees,” said Hanna Bagley with Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful. “It’s located right beside the Floyd County Health Department and we are very excited to rededicate these trees back to the city. So, if everybody wants to come stretch their legs after lunch and we get to celebrate all the cool trees that our public works division has worked so hard to install and all the good things they do for us.”

She said a variety of trees have been planted at the park.

“We have Nuttall Oak, Red and Black Gums, Afterburner Gums, Afterburner Black Gums, and then Shumard Oaks,” Bagley said. “We have a few of each of them and they will be dotted around the property. Two of them will be near a very small parking lot and the other six will be close to McLin Street.”

The land for the park was donated to the city a number of years ago and it borders Silver Creek.

“It’s kind of hidden back there so you can actually walk to the back of the property. You can sit on the creek bank and enjoy the area. There are a lot of trees out there near the creek already. So, we already have established canopy but we are going to establish more canopy at the front. Thankfully, Georgia Power came in and did a lot of work burying the overhead lines. So, that gave us a huge boost to where we can plant large growth trees in the area as opposed to trees like Dogwoods, fruit trees or things of that nature.” Parking for the ceremony will
