PFC Dalton Gibbs is the Rome City Police Department’s Officer of the Year.

Gibbs was honored by the Rome City Commission Monday night.

According to the proclamation read by Commissioner Harry Brock, who chairs the city’s public safety committee, Gibbs found himself thrust into a life-threatening situation when he responded to an armed robbery call on February 23, 2024.

“PFC Gibbs, without hesitation and with unwavering courage, rushed into chaos, determined to stop a violent criminal and protect the lives of innocent individuals at risk,” the proclamation read. “He engaged the suspect in a dangerous foot pursuit. During that pursuit, when the suspect aimed a firearm at PFC Gibbs and responding fellow officer PFC Weeks, thus expressing his intent to avoid capture at all costs, PFC Gibbs responded swiftly, neutralizing the suspect, and no doubt saving the life of his fellow officer.”

Gibbs told the commission that policing is s specific calling.

“My mom has a picture of me as a young boy at an interactive museum, playing dress up as a cop,” he said. “She said since that day she knew I would one day be a police officer. Here I am five and a half years later, being able to do just that. I’d first like to thank God for laying that calling on my heart, and for protecting me. I’d like to thank the department and the city for bringing me in, training me up right, and taking care of me—and for providing me the opportunity to do the job I love. I’d like to thank my family and my friends who have been there for me, especially in this last year which has been quite a roller coaster—and specifically my wife, who ix years ago, helped me fill out the application to be where I am today.”

Since joining the Rome Police Department in 2019, Gibbs has worked primarily with the patrol division and occasionally has worked with the investigations division.
