The Floyd County Board of Education has given its approval for a new speed enforcement camera in the Armuchee Elementary School Zone.
Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department spoke to board members during their pre-meeting caucus.
He cited numbers from traffic studies in that area conducted by RedSpeed.
“When we look at the Armuchee Elementary School, what kind of got me was the number of cars that went through there in a day,” Hunton said. “There were over 3,000 cars that passed the front of the entrance and exit of that school in one school day. I think 715 of those were speeding.”
Armuchee Elementary School is located on Highway 140 at Floyd Springs Road.
Hunton told the board that the speed camera in the Armuchee Primary School Zone on Highway 27 North has made a difference.
“We continue to see a reduction of speeders,” he said. “We continue to see in crashes, and that’s our goal. As a police department, we want people to slow down and to reduce the number of crashes, especially in school zones.”
The new camera also has to be approved by the Floyd County Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
