Rome City Commissioners got a trails update during their Monday caucus session and heard about plans for a possible new feature at Ridgeferry Park that would surely be a hit for local cycling enthusiasts.

“We’re planning to build a pump track,” said Commissioner Jamie Doss during the commission’s regular meeting. “It would be the first pump track in Northwest Georgia.”

A pump track is built specifically for bicycling and features a circuit of rollers, along with banked turns. Bicyclists ride on a pump track using up-and-down body movements instead of peddling or pushing. Pump tracks are popular with kids, amateurs, and professionals.

“We’ve wanted to have one for years,” said Rome Transportation and Trails Planner Julie Smith. The closest one is in Cobb County.”

Smith stressed that they are only in the preliminary stages of procuring for the design phase.

The area of the park that is being looked at is near the playground and volleyball pit.
