A new state law goes into effect on July 1 regarding permits for fireworks displays.

Senate Bill 417 requires permits be issued by the fire department instead of the magistrate court.

According to Floyd County Public Safety Division Director John Blaylock, the county commission will also be asked to approve a fee for the permits.

There is a board agenda request on that item to add the fee of $100 per application for a fireworks permit to our fee schedule,” he said. “These are for public displays of fireworks. These are not for bottle rockets in your backyard.”

$100 is the maximum fee allowed by the state law.

According to Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord, they are seeing more weddings and other events hosting fireworks displays.
