Winter Weather Advisory in effect

Winter Weather Advisory in effect

January 2, 2022–7:00 p.m.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of Northwest Georgia from midnight to 9 a.m. Monday.

A dusting of snow to up to one and a half inches is possible in the advisory area, which includes Floyd, Gordon, Chattooga, Bartow, and Polk Counties.

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for some counties to the northwest and northeast of us.

Two to four inches of snow is possible with locally higher amounts possible in the warning area.

Also, look for winds gusting to 35mph area-wide, and up to 45mph in the mountains.

From Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Tim Herrington:

The active weather pattern will continue over the next 24 hours with storms expected in Central and South Georgia and wintry precipitation forecast for North Georgia overnight.

Wrap-around moisture will interact with the intruding cold air to create some wintry precipitation in North Georgia overnight. The National Weather Service has placed much of North Georgia under a Winter Weather Advisory for some light snowfall accumulations between midnight tonight and sunrise tomorrow. Up to 2 inches is possible on higher elevations of the North Georgia mountains, up to 1 inch is possible across the rest of far North Georgia, and up to ½ inch is possible north and west of the Metro Atlanta area.

Although quite a bit of wintry precipitation could be observed after midnight in North Georgia, ground temperatures will still be quite warm and air temperatures at the surface will still be above freezing, so much of what falls is not expected to stick. Low temperatures just before sunrise are forecast to be near or above freezing outside of the highest elevations, so anything that sticks should be gone by midday. There could be some slippery road conditions on Monday morning, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
